Birka Princess

later Sea Diamond

Birka Princess was built in 1986 at the now defunct Vuosaari shipyard in Helsinki for for the now defunct Birka Cruises to undertake short overnight trips out of Stockholm. In 1999 she underwent an extensive refit at Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven. She was sold to Louis Cruises in 2006 and renamed Sea Diamond as soon as the new Birka Paradise was comissioned. In April 2006 Sea Diamond sank after running aground near Santorini, two passengers are still missing. During the investigations of that accident it has been found that the official nautical charts used aboard Sea Diamond were incorrect and falsely indicated that the ship was on a safe course.
